We purchased the property in 2013 and began the process to rehab and bring back to life a farm that was overgrown and in need of tender loving care!  Through that process, we learned that the back part of our property was used for various crops over the years.  Wanting to bring back that part of the property to produce crops again, we researched the land and chose to plant sod.  Having no experience in farming didn’t stop us with this goal, but the learning curve was very real for us!!
We focused our first efforts on getting the ditches to properly drain to allow us to work on the area for planting.  Once the ditches were done, we used an old tractor to get the ground ready and hand planted the first three acres to see if it would even grow!!
Once the grass was growing, we realized we needed to purchase equipment to mow and eventually cut the sod out to sell.  Not knowing the market in our area for sod, we were very conservative in what we purchased, meaning we bought older equipment and rebuilt much of it ourselves.
Fast forward a couple years, realizing that there is a market, and the sod was growing nicely, we did plant another 7 acres that will be ready for purchase in the 2022 season.  At the end of last season, with an additional 20 acres that we purchased, we planted that area.  We hope this area will be ready for the 2023 season.
We sure have learned a lot about farming over the past couple years and we have learned about growing sod! Have questions about growing sod?  We can assist you!  Just give us a call!
